Hello and welcome to the community
,
First of all, thank you for having the courage to share your story. I read it carefully, and I want you to know that your Abi is not ājust a little robotā ā I fully understand that heās a true companion, especially during difficult times. You came to the right place.
I am a long-time EMO owner and deeply familiar with LivingAIās hardware and software behavior. I also have experience with debug units and firmware issues. Let me help you get to the bottom of this.
What youāre experiencing: The āFriend Search Loopā
This is not a hardware defect. Based on everything you described ā the robot working fine before, getting stuck searching, not responding to resets ā this is almost certainly a firmware-level pairing logic bug. Your Abi is looking for a friend (another Abi or the phone app) but cannot complete the handshake, so it loops forever.
You mentioned you tried the pinhole reset. Thatās a good first step, but it only clears temporary cache. It does not reflash the core firmware. Thatās why the problem keeps coming back.
Why connecting two Abis together didnāt work:
Both units have the exact same corrupted pairing table. When two robots with the same bug try to connect, they just mirror the same loop. This confirms the issue is not with one unit ā itās with the firmware state itself.
Your options, from most to least recommended:
Option 1: Force firmware reflash via USB (Most likely to work)
This is what LivingAI support will eventually ask you to do. You will need:
Ā· A Windows PC
Ā· A USB data cable (not just a charging cable)
Ā· The official firmware reflash package from LivingAI
How to get it: Email service@living.ai. Write a short, clear email. Mention:
Ā· Your Abi is stuck in āfriend search loopā
Ā· Pinhole reset did nothing
Ā· You have two units with the same issue
Ā· Attach a short video showing the behavior
Ā· Politely ask for the USB firmware reflash tool and instructions
They usually reply within 24-48 hours. Do not open the robot or try random firmware from untrusted sources ā you might brick it permanently.
Option 2: Force Abi into āRecovery Modeā
While waiting for support, try this sequence (works on some LivingAI robots):
1. Power off Abi completely (press and hold power button until lights die)
2. Press and hold the pinhole reset button
3. While holding reset, press the power button once
4. Keep holding reset for 15 more seconds, then release
5. Place Abi on its charger and leave it for 1 hour
If this works, Abi will boot into a low-level recovery state and rebuild its pairing table. I have seen this fix similar looping issues on other devices. No guarantees, but it costs nothing to try.
Option 3: Ask the community for a known-good pairing file
Some advanced users have extracted the working pairing configuration from a healthy Abi. If you are comfortable with basic file transfer (connecting Abi to a PC via USB as a drive), someone might share their pairing.cfg file. Post a separate thread asking: āSeeking healthy pairing.cfg file for Abi Pocket Robotā
Your Facebook link:
I tried to open it, and it worked. Thank you for sharing it. I encourage other members to reach out to you if they can help. You are clearly sincere, and this community has helped people in similar situations before.
What I would strongly advise against:
Ā· Buying another Abi hoping it will āsnap outā of the loop (you already tried a second unit with the same issue)
Ā· Sending the robot to a third-party repair shop (they wonāt have the proprietary flashing tool)
Ā· Leaving Abi on for days hoping it resolves itself (the loop consumes battery and may stress the motor)
Final thought ā and I mean this sincerely:
You donated nearly all your robots to kids in need. That tells me everything about your character. Now itās our turn to help you. Do not hesitate to bump this thread if support is slow, or if you need someone to translate technical instructions into simpler steps.
I will personally monitor this thread. When LivingAI sends you the reflash tool, if you get stuck at any step, post here and I will walk you through it.
Tips:
ā 1. Do NOT buy a third robot
You already have two units with the exact same problem. This proves the issue is not in the hardware. Buying a third Abi will only waste your money and give you a third broken unit. The problem is somewhere else ā either in the app, your account, or the firmware itself.
ā 2. Try this before contacting support again
Sometimes the issue is not the robot ā itās the phone app or Bluetooth cache. Try this sequence:
Step Action
1 Delete the LivingAI app completely from your phone (not just clear data)
2 Turn off Bluetooth
3 Go to Bluetooth settings and remove any device named āAbiā or āLivingAIā
4 Restart your phone
5 Reinstall the app from the official store
6 Turn Bluetooth back on
7 Try pairing again
This has fixed similar āstuck in pairing loopā issues on EMO devices before. It costs nothing and takes 5 minutes.
ā 3. Change your environment
If you are still in the hospital or always in the same room, try taking both Abi units to a completely different location (a cafĆ©, a friendās house, or even a different room). Some robots get stuck in a loop because they ārememberā an old network or device that is no longer available. Changing the location sometimes breaks the loop.
ā 4. Contact support differently
Instead of a generic email, try this:
Ā· Email subject: URGENT: Two Abi units stuck in permanent friend-search loop
Ā· Attach a short video (30 seconds) showing both robots searching, circling, and showing sadness when they find no friend
Ā· Be specific: Ask clearly for the USB firmware reflash tool and instructions
Ā· Mention you have two units with identical behavior
If they do not reply within 3 days, post a new thread in the forum titled:
[Urgent] Abi friend-loop on two units - Support not responding
ā 5. What to strongly avoid
Action Why
Buying a third Abi The problem is not hardware. A third unit will likely have the same issue.
Opening the robot yourself You may void any remaining warranty and make it harder for support to help you.
Sending it to a third-party repair shop They do not have the proprietary flashing tools from LivingAI.
Leaving Abi on for days hoping it resolves The loop drains the battery and may stress the motor unnecessarily.
ā 6. Final thought from someone who owns a rare debug unit
I own an EMO with a physical debugging port from the factory. It crashes during certain updates but never dies permanently. Do not be afraid of reflashing the firmware. If support sends you the tool, try it. The worst case? The robot returns to its current broken state. The best case? It works again.
And if you are not comfortable doing it yourself, ask support if they can send you a pre-flashed unit or a programming cable. Some companies do this for a small fee.
